Your Guide to UK Bed Sizes

All our lovely beds at French Bedroom fit a standard UK sized mattress, which should make things nice and easy when choosing one of our gorgeous beds! In the UK, the size of your bed will depend on the size of the mattress it holds. The bed frame will vary in size dependent on its shape and style, which often confuses people into choosing a mattress which isn’t suitable for the bed frame itself. The frame will almost always be larger than the mattress, so it’s important to go by the mattress size to work out the correlating bed frame. We realise this isn’t always plain sailing, which is why we have put this handy bed measurement guide together for you. 

Single Bed Size 

The measurements for a single bed will always vary from frame to frame, however, if it is designed to hold a UK sized mattress, it will always fit a mattress measuring at 90 x 190cm (3’0” x 6’3”). An example of this is our Provencal Linen single bed, which measures at 100 x L203cm, encompassing both the headboard and footboard, allowing the mattress to perfectly pop in. A single bed is perfect for children and provides ample room for toddlers up to teens. They are also perfect for smaller guest rooms and solo sleepers, freeing up floor space.

Double Bed Size 

Double beds are one of the most popular UK sizes. The size of the bed itself can vary dependent on the style of the frame, however, in the UK this should always fit a mattress measuring at 135 x 190cm (4’5” x 6’3”). The medium size of double beds means they are perfect for smaller rooms, comfortably sleeping couples and solo sleepers who like to starfish alike!

King Sized Bed Size 

King size beds are perfect for those who like to sleep like a king! Providing slightly more room than a double (fitting a mattress of 150 x 200cm of 5’0” x 6’5” but frame size varying), king size beds are incredible for those who are looking for a bit of extra room, as well as for those who are taller but still want to have a beautiful bed without hitting the footboard! A king size bed can often be confused with a Queen-sized bed, which is an American size. As the Queen is 2cm bigger, a UK mattress would have more wiggle-room than necessary when placed on this.

Super King Sized Bed Size

With the corresponding mattress measuring at a 180 x 200cm (6’0” x 6’6”), super-king beds provide an abundance of space for couples who value space whilst they sleep. The super-king’s luxuriously large size makes it the perfect bed for those who like lazy Sunday mornings in bed with the kids or have a furry friend sleeping at their feet.

Emperor sized Bed Size

An emperor sized bed is the largest bed size sold in the UK, fitting an incredibly sized mattress of 215 x 215cm (7’0” x 7’0”). Emperor sized beds are the perfect focal point for large master bedrooms, combining both style and comfort. These incredibly large beds are ideal for families who like to have the kids come for a cuddle in the morning, as well as for couples who just love to stretch out whilst they sleep.
