Perfect for creating bright, airy bedrooms with a romantic blend of French elegance and Scandinavian style.
The Gustavian White Collection
Our Gustavian White Collection captures the softer, more romantic side of this timeless Swedish design. Designed in Sussex by French Bedroom's design team, the Gustavian White collection of linear French furniture is made from solid wood, painted in French white; a reimagined style of our very first collection of French furniture sold when we launched back in 2006.
Inspired by 18th-century interiors, Gustavian furniture is traditionally characterised by light, muted tones, elegant symmetry and finely carved detailing. All designed to reflect light and bring a sense of calm to the home. Our white painted finishes enhance this effect, creating bright, airy bedroom furniture that feels both refined and effortlessly liveable.
What is Gustavian style furniture?
The origins of Gustavian style date back to King Gustav III of Sweden, who, inspired by the opulence of French interiors at Versailles, sought to reinterpret this grandeur in a more restrained and practical way. The result was a style defined not by excess but by balance, where classical French influence meets Scandinavian simplicity. Painted finishes in soft whites and pale neutrals became essential, helping to maximise light during long Nordic winters and creating interiors that felt open, serene and harmonious.
Today, white Gustavian furniture remains one of the most versatile choices for the bedroom. Its neutral palette pairs beautifully with natural linens, soft upholstery and layered textures, making it ideal for creating a light, restful space. Whether styled in a classic country home or a more contemporary setting, these pieces bring a sense of quiet luxury that never feels overworked or overly styled.
Carved detailing such as fluted panels and tapered legs are part of Gustavian furniture’s considered design. As are ‘hidden’ features such as drawers, trays, and shelves; hidden gems that serve both purpose and style. A Gustavian armoire could hide a small ‘nail varnish drawer’ perhaps, or a Gustavian bedside table may feature a removable top tray – perfect for enjoying breakfast in bed. What makes white painted bedroom furniture a good choice?
White painted bedroom furniture is timeless, versatile and ideal for creating a calm, restful space. Its light-reflecting qualities help make rooms feel larger and brighter, enhancing both natural and artificial light. The soft, neutral tone works effortlessly across a variety of interior styles, from classic country homes to more contemporary settings, pairing beautifully with natural linens, upholstered textures and layered finishes.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, white painted furniture offers a sense of quiet elegance that never dates. It provides a clean, considered foundation for the bedroom, allowing you to update your space seasonally through textiles and accessories without needing to replace key pieces. Whether styled for a romantic, French-inspired interior or a more pared-back Scandinavian look, it brings a feeling of balance, lightness and understated luxury to the home.
