Styling Your Home with Colour: Expert Advice from Our Founder

Colour as a Texture, for soft ‘drenching’

Choose one colour and use across textiles and textures to generate visual intrigue. Such as white across lace curtains, velvet headboard, jute white rug, jacquard cushions, ceramic vases, wooden floorboards, beaded chandelier, silk lampshades, ruffled linen bedspread. When you choose just one colour you can really play with the textures. And if you do choose to introduce a colour (e.g. the yellow puffs of seasonal mimosa or jasmine) then it will really pop.

This is a bedroom version of colour-drenching, using softness instead of just ‘hard-drenched’ floor to ceiling colour.

Colour as a Mood Changer

We can look to the expert art of Feng Shui here which treats colour as a way of influencing energy (called chi) in a space, so bedroom colours are chosen to support rest, intimacy, and emotional balance. The key idea: bedrooms should feel calm, nurturing, and slightly yin (soft, restful energy), not overly stimulating.

For a soft & calming room to support rest:

  • Muted, gentle tones such as light neutrals (cream, beige, soft taupe), and soft earth tones (sand, warm browns or pastels).

For love & relationships to support intimacy:

  • Soft pinks / blush tones encourage romance and emotional openness

  • Peach tones for warmth and attraction

  • Lavender colours for calm intimacy and emotional healing

  • Too much bright red can create restlessness or conflict - so use it sparingly (e.g. cushions) or opt for berry tones.

Avoid overly-stimulating colours such as dark red, neon pink, bright orange in the bedroom, (although these colours are great for dining rooms as they are energising and encourage conversation).

Colour as a Style

Use colour to convey the style you want to create in your room.

French blue as a Provence scene-setter:

  • Blue is synonymous with French style, hence the term ‘French blue’ it conveys all the softness of neutral colours but with a little more depth and prowess. It also pairs with myriad other colours from whites to warm wooden tones.

Light Sage Green for Cotswold charm:

  • Great when used against the oatmeal family of neutrals, sage green makes a perfect pairing partner for all beige, chalk, and cream tones too. It says ‘smart country charm’ think hunter Wellies and lunch at Daylesford Organic. But mostly, the pairing of oatmeal and sage emulates the browns and greens within nature.

Shop Blue Bedrooms

Blue is one of the most naturally calming colours you can introduce into a bedroom. From soft sky tones to deep navy, blue creates a sense of tranquillity that makes the space feel restful and composed.

Lighter blue accessories such as cushions, throws and painted furniture reflect natural light beautifully, helping the room feel airy and relaxed. These softer tones are particularly effective in creating a peaceful sleep environment.

Deeper shades such as navy bring richness and sophistication to a bedroom. Blue velvet cushions, upholstered headboards and darker-toned furniture add depth and elegance while maintaining the soothing qualities that make blue such a timeless choice for interiors.

The best shades of blue for a bedroom depend on the atmosphere you want to create. For a balanced approach, consider layering multiple blue tones together to add dimension and visual interest while keeping the scheme cohesive and timeless.

Soft baby blue and pale blue tones are ideal for a light, airy and tranquil space. These gentle shades reflect natural light beautifully and help smaller bedrooms feel more open and serene.

For a richer, more dramatic look, navy and dark blue shades work exceptionally well. Navy blue cushions, velvet headboards and deeper-toned furniture add depth and sophistication while still maintaining blue’s calming qualities.

Blue pairs beautifully with crisp white, soft grey, warm brass and natural wood tones. White keeps a blue bedroom feeling fresh and airy, while brass accents add warmth and elegance. For a softer look, layer blue with pale neutrals like oatmeal, linen or blush pink.

Blue pairs effortlessly with crisp white for a coastal feel, natural wood tones, or soft greys and neutrals. Whether you’re refreshing with blue home accessories or investing in larger blue furniture pieces, this timeless shade creates a space that feels composed, confident and beautifully balanced.

Blue bedroom accessories work beautifully when layered through texture and subtle variations in tone. Cushions, throws and decorative accents in different blue shades help create depth while keeping the overall look calm and cohesive.

Shop Pink Bedrooms

Pink furniture works best when it becomes a soft focal point within the room. Upholstered headboards or ottomans in blush and rose tones add colour while still maintaining a gentle, elegant feel.

Layering pink through smaller accessories such as cushions, quilts or throws helps tie the space together. Rich fabrics such as velvet, linen and embroidered cotton enhance the colour’s softness and give the bedroom a refined, luxurious feel.

Pink brings warmth, softness and quiet elegance to a bedroom, creating a space that feels inviting and restful. Modern pink interiors often favour more muted shades such as blush, dusty rose and delicate petal pink. These softer tones introduce colour in a subtle, refined way, allowing the room to feel warm and characterful without becoming overpowering.

When used thoughtfully throughout the bedroom, pink adds a graceful touch of colour while maintaining a calm and balanced feel, creating a space that feels both beautifully styled and effortlessly relaxing.

The most timeless pink bedrooms tend to favour softer, more muted tones rather than brighter shades. Colours such as blush pink, faded rose and delicate powder pink introduce warmth while maintaining a gentle, understated elegance.

These refined pink hues bring a natural softness to the bedroom, creating an atmosphere that feels calm, welcoming and beautifully composed. Their subtle warmth allows the space to feel comforting and serene, while still adding a touch of graceful colour.

Cozy bedroom with a wooden bed, pastel pink and beige bedding, two bedside tables, and table lamps against a soft pink wall.

Shop Green Bedrooms

Green bedroom furniture and décor are best styled by layering different shades and textures to create a space that feels calm and naturally balanced. Upholstered beds or benches can act as statement pieces, while green cushions and bedspreads introduce softer accents throughout the room. Rich fabrics such as velvet, linen and quilted cotton enhance the colour’s natural warmth, allowing green décor to feel both elegant and restful within the bedroom.

Green offers a wide spectrum of tones, each creating a different atmosphere. Soft sage and muted eucalyptus greens are ideal for a calm, understated bedroom, bringing gentle colour without overwhelming the space.

For more depth and drama, richer tones such as forest green or emerald add sophistication and presence. These deeper shades work beautifully on upholstered headboards, armchairs and statement cushions, creating a bedroom that feels layered and luxurious.

A calming green bedroom often centres around softer, nature-inspired shades such as sage, olive or moss green. These tones feel gentle and restful, helping the space feel serene and inviting.

Layering green through bedding, cushions and upholstery allows the colour to flow naturally throughout the room, creating a bedroom that feels cohesive, tranquil and effortlessly elegant.

Green pairs beautifully with soft neutrals and natural textures, helping to create a calm and balanced bedroom. Shades such as ivory, cream and warm beige allow green furniture and accessories to stand out while keeping the space light and elegant.

For a richer look, deeper greens work especially well with warm metallic accents like brass or gold. Natural materials such as wood, rattan and linen also complement green tones, enhancing the colour’s connection to nature and creating a bedroom that feels relaxed, layered and inviting.

Shop Yellow Bedrooms

Style a yellow bedroom by balancing warm yellow tones with soft neutrals like white, cream or light grey. Layer in natural textures such as linen, wood and woven materials to add depth and softness. Introducing subtle patterns and gentle tonal variations of yellow can enhance the sunshine-filled feel, creating a space that feels light, relaxed and beautifully inviting.

Introduce yellow through small accents like cushions, throws, lamps or a rug to bring warmth and a hint of sunshine into a neutral bedroom. This keeps the look light, fresh and easy to update.

Softer yellows such as pastel, butter or muted gold are ideal for bedrooms, as they bring a gentle sense of sunshine without feeling overwhelming. These understated tones create a warm, inviting atmosphere while still maintaining a calm and restful feel. Pale, creamy yellows can make a space feel light and airy, while slightly deeper, golden hues add a touch of richness and elegance. Choosing the right shade helps create a soothing, sunlit bedroom that feels both uplifting and beautifully serene.

A cozy bedroom with a wooden bed, ruffled pillows, and a sunlit yellow bedspread. A nightstand holds a pale yellow lamp, and across the floor is a wiggle yellow and pink rug.

Shop White Bedrooms

White bedroom furniture creates a bright, calm and timeless sanctuary. It reflects light beautifully, helping bedrooms feel larger, fresher and effortlessly serene. By reflecting rather than absorbing light, white enhances both smaller and darker spaces, while in well-lit rooms it elevates that airy, tranquil atmosphere.

Elegant and endlessly versatile, white never goes out of style. It pairs beautifully with any colour palette, soft neutrals for a romantic bedroom, delicate pastels for a classic French feel, or deeper tones for refined contrast. This makes it easy to refresh your space with cushions, throws or accessories without replacing your core furniture. White also allows textures and craftsmanship to shine, from hand-carved detailing to soft linens, perfect for French-inspired, shabby chic, Scandinavian or modern classic interiors.

Layering is key. Introduce a mix of textures such as soft linen bedding, quilted cushions, woven throws and beautifully carved furniture to create depth and visual interest. This combination adds warmth and character while keeping the overall look light, calm and elegant. You can also incorporate subtle tonal variations—like ivory, cream and soft neutrals—to enhance the richness of the space without losing that serene, cohesive feel.

White décor pairs beautifully with almost any colour, making it wonderfully versatile. For a soft, calming look, layer neutral tones like beige, taupe, ivory and warm greys. Perfect for a serene, elegant bedroom.

If you prefer a more romantic, French-inspired feel, opt for pastel shades such as blush pink, duck egg blue, lavender or sage green. These add gentle colour while keeping the space light and refined.

For contrast and a more dramatic look, deeper tones like charcoal, navy, forest green or even black can ground the room and add sophistication.

Shop Brown Bedrooms

Brown brings an immediate sense of warmth, comfort and grounding to a bedroom, making it one of the most enduring colours in interior design. Inspired by nature, from rich walnut woods to soft earthy tones, brown creates a calming atmosphere that encourages relaxation and rest.

To style brown successfully, balance deeper shades with lighter neutrals such as ivory, linen or warm beige to keep the space feeling fresh and inviting. Layering natural textures, elegant lighting and complementary accents helps add depth while maintaining a beautifully cohesive look. Whether used through furniture, textiles or decorative accessories, brown offers a timeless foundation for a bedroom that feels both sophisticated and welcoming.

Brown furniture creates a warm and inviting foundation for a bedroom. Balance deeper wood tones with soft neutrals such as ivory, beige or linen, then layer tactile textures through bedding, cushions and throws to create a relaxed yet elegant space.

Natural materials, antique-inspired accents and gentle lighting help enhance the richness of brown furniture while maintaining a calm, timeless atmosphere.

Dark brown furniture can feel surprisingly light when paired with softer elements. Introduce pale bedding, mirrors and warm neutral walls to reflect light throughout the room and create balance.

Natural textures and layered lighting also help soften the look while allowing darker furniture pieces to remain the focal point.

Brown furniture pairs beautifully with warm neutrals such as ivory, linen, taupe and soft beige. For a more richer aesthetic, consider deep olive greens, muted blues or rich burgundy accents that complement the natural warmth of wood.

Repeat brown tones throughout the room in subtle ways, such as through textiles, artwork and decorative accessories. Varying the shades from lighter caramel tones to deeper walnut hues adds interest while maintaining harmony.

This layered approach creates a balanced and sophisticated space without feeling overly coordinated.
