Picnics & Puccini: Our Twentieth Anniversary Celebration at Glyndebourne

Some places have a way of making time slow down, like you’re living amongst pages that have been lifted from a novel.

As I descended the worn stone staircase of Glyndebourne’s Old Green Room, catching a glimpse of guests gathering on the lawns below, I was reminded why this extraordinary Sussex estate continues to captivate visitors almost a century after its founding. The late evening sunlight cast long shadows across the gardens, celebratory conversations and laughter filled the air, champagne glasses sparkled in the distance, and beyond the trees lay the promise of Puccini’s Tosca.

This year felt particularly special.

As French Bedroom celebrates its twentieth anniversary, we are honoured to partner with Glyndebourne, supporting a season that shares so many of the values that have shaped our own journey: craftsmanship, beauty, heritage, creativity and a deep appreciation for experiences that enrich everyday life.

A house designed for gatherings; there is something uniquely English about Glyndebourne. Set within rolling Sussex countryside, the historic house and gardens provide a setting that feels both grand and wonderfully welcoming. Guests arrive dressed for the occasion, gathering across the lawns and terraces before performances begin.

Unlike any other opera experience, Glyndebourne encourages visitors to make an occasion of the evening and the pace feels refreshingly removed from everyday life.

As the afternoon gave way to evening, the gardens become a stage of their own, with elegantly dressed guests mingling beneath ancient trees and against the backdrop of the house’s striking brick façades.

One of the most charming spaces at Glyndebourne is the Old Green Room.

Rich wood panelling, historic architectural details and carefully curated furnishings create an atmosphere that feels intimate despite the scale of the building. It is exactly the sort of room that reminds us why timeless interiors never lose their appeal.

Natural materials, craftsmanship and a sense of permanence are woven throughout the space, qualities that resonate strongly with our own philosophy at French Bedroom.

Every detail feels considered. From the warm timber floors to the beautiful stone fireplace and elegant seating, the room provides a quiet retreat from the excitement of the evening beyond.

Part of Glyndebourne’s magic lies in the moments between performances. These unhurried moments encourage reflection and conversation in a way that feels increasingly rare.

The atmosphere is relaxed yet refined; elegant without ever feeling formal for formality’s sake.

Outside, the gardens were at their summer best. Lavender, foxgloves and alliums softened the historic architecture, creating painterly views from every angle. The relationship between house and garden is one of Glyndebourne’s greatest strengths, each enhancing the beauty of the other.

Around us, families and friends gathered beneath ancient trees. Champagne corks popping echoed softly in the distance. The lake shimmered beneath a canopy of reeds and wild grasses, whilst guests in silk gowns and black tie drifted between picnic tables dressed in crisp white linen.

One detail that particularly caught my attention was Glyndebourne’s thoughtful sustainability, exemplified by their cork recycling initiative.
A small but meaningful reminder that preserving heritage and protecting the future can go hand in hand. Sustainability is increasingly important across every aspect of design and hospitality, and it was encouraging to see these values reflected so naturally throughout the estate.

There is a unique excitement that accompanies live opera. The orchestra tuning, the gradual dimming of the lights and the shared expectation of everyone in the room that creates an atmosphere unlike any other form of performance.

Tosca delivered everything one hopes for from Glyndebourne: extraordinary musical talent, compelling storytelling and a production that felt both emotionally powerful and visually captivating.

As the evening sun dipped lower across the estate, the gardens were transformed once again.

The soft golden light illuminated the lawns, historic brickwork and surrounding countryside, creating scenes that felt almost cinematic.

It was a fitting backdrop for an evening dedicated to beauty, artistry and celebration.

As French Bedroom marks twenty years of creating beautiful homes, we remain deeply grateful for partnerships that share our appreciation for craftsmanship, culture and timeless design.

Our continued association with Glyndebourne reflects values that have guided us from the beginning: supporting creativity, celebrating heritage and creating experiences that leave a lasting impression.

We look forward to many more memorable evenings beneath the Sussex sky.

One thing I adore about the French approach to life and interiors is the belief that small moments matter. A quiet pause in a warm café. A soft morning light falling across crumpled linen. A breakfast in bed that makes you feel held, rather than hurried. December is abundant: school concerts, gatherings, gift-buying, wrapping, decorating, writing cards - layers of love that require our attention. Taking tiny pockets of time for yourself can transform these rituals from feeling like chores into moments filled with meaning.
