Georgia's Note

This hand drawn design depicts an elegantly dressed woman alongside a man playing the flute; a whimsical, wholesome scene. The pattern portrays a countryside landscape adorned with illustrative florals including our favourite flower, the peony. The design serves as a bridge between French tradition and fresh elegant bedrooms so it's kismet that we include a French toile design in our bed linen collection.

The cotton cover is filled with a polyester inner, making it the perfect hypo-allergenic choice for guest rooms. The cover is sealed with a simple envelope style closure on the reverse.

A matching bed linen and bedspread are available. Also available in a pale pink colour.

The History of Toile.

Toile de Jouy is the stalwart of French design. Originally produced in Ireland in the 18th century, it quickly became popular in France during the reign of the Louis kings. Their style, taste and spending on lavish living and palaces was one of the contributing factors to the French revolution.

The designs depicted women being serenaded with musical instruments, tipsy peasants frolicking in fields, countryside picnics, and moments of dancing and merriment; the gentle drawings were designed to lift the spirits of the people.

Traditionally monotone in colour, the strongest colour seen in the 19th century was raspberry red, the quintessential hue of French design.

19th century French fashion was to cover an entire bedroom in Toile, from mirror frames to wall coverings, bed pelmets, curtains and bedlinen. More recent years have seen the print used on wallpapers, curtains, upholstery and soft furnishings.

The classic French Toile has recently had a renaissance, and the print can be seen not just in room schemes, but on handbags, apparel and tableware by notable designers, such as Christian Dior.

Toile is hugely versatile and always sophisticated, so when decorating with Toile play with different scales and modern colours for a contemporary twist, we love pale pink for romantic bedrooms, or navy blue for a grandiose aesthetic.
