Elegant, timeless, dashing and - dare we say it - a little sexy, ‘Classic Blue’ has been announced as Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2020. A rich shade with hints of cobalt, between navy and royal, ‘Classic Blue’ has a rather luxurious feel; just think of all those châteaux and stately homes, where it is teamed with lashings of beautiful gold French furniture or used as a backdrop to collections of Old Masters to make the artwork pop.
While it might seem a little predictable to be addressing ‘the blues’ in January, deep blue hues aren’t a new thing for 2020, Instagram has seen a wave of darker, elegant blues for the past few years. Farrow & Ball’s iconic Hague Blue now has over 26k posts on its very own Instagram hashtag featuring statement walls, bold rooms and painted furniture in the luxurious inky-blue tone.
"These deep blues became popular in 2013 and have been becoming more mainstream and familiar ever since," says Dulux creative director Marianne Shillingford, "They are perfect for spaces where we want to sleep, dream and relax — it's a colour you can dive into and of course blue is the world's favourite colour.”
