Pantone’s Colour of the Year, 2020 is Classic Blue. We’re showing how a sea of blue can transform your home and mood.

Classic Blue and gold French Sofa

Elegant, timeless, dashing and - dare we say it - a little sexy, ‘Classic Blue’ has been announced as Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2020. A rich shade with hints of cobalt, between navy and royal, ‘Classic Blue’ has a rather luxurious feel; just think of all those châteaux and stately homes, where it is teamed with lashings of beautiful gold French furniture or used as a backdrop to collections of Old Masters to make the artwork pop.

While it might seem a little predictable to be addressing ‘the blues’ in January, deep blue hues aren’t a new thing for 2020, Instagram has seen a wave of darker, elegant blues for the past few years. Farrow & Ball’s iconic Hague Blue now has over 26k posts on its very own Instagram hashtag featuring statement walls, bold rooms and painted furniture in the luxurious inky-blue tone.

"These deep blues became popular in 2013 and have been becoming more mainstream and familiar ever since," says Dulux creative director Marianne Shillingford, "They are perfect for spaces where we want to sleep, dream and relax — it's a colour you can dive into and of course blue is the world's favourite colour.”

We all seem to be diving into these dependable, blue tones for our interior design, as not only does it make a splash on its own – as a feature wall, striking French velvet sofa or blue velvet upholstered bed – it’s a perfect anchor for pairing with lighter shades of blue for a cool, tonal look, or giving a sophisticated edge to softer, warmer pinks. Here we share some of the ways we love to style the colour of 2020 for stylish impact in our homes.

Classic Blue with Warm Accents

Navy, Oxford or Classic – darker blues are often seen as dignified and representative of quality. These associations are less surprising when you note that blue pigments once cost more than gold. When paired with warm metallic finishes, such as brass wall lights and gold side tables, it transforms from a moody enigma into a luxurious, oh-so classic, royal power couple.

Classic Blue with Blush Pink

Classic dark blue gives pink - be it blush, millennial, powder or dusty - a certain solemnity, and pink keeps deep blues from being too sensible and dour. They’re an ideal couple, two partners who bring out the best in each other.

Classic Blue with Shades of Blue

From the palest, powder blues that can create a coastal feel to deep inky classic blues with their cocooning effect, blues are known to bring a sense of calm and stillness making them the perfect choice for a bedroom. Create a cosy, blue boudoir with dark blue walls, lightening with fresh, crisp white bed linen and soft blue velvet bedroom cushions; or, add drama to a pretty blue bedroom with a pop of dark blue velvet on a beautiful chair, sumptuous velvet throw or upholstered French Bed.
