At French Bedroom, we are committed to creating beautiful spaces that not only look great, but also have a positive impact on the environment. This Earth Day, we’re sharing some tips on how to decorate more sustainably with luxury French furniture, reclaimed wood furniture, luxury jute rugs and ethical bed linen.

Choose jute for your floors

Floor rugs are an essential element in any bedroom, and they are also an excellent way to add warmth and texture to a space. Our Sundar Scallop Natural Jute Rugs are not only beautiful but also artisanal.

Hand-crafted in a family factory in India, the working methods of production ensure the sustainability of the materials. Any excess from the manufacture is spun on a Charkha – a traditional spinning wheel - and used again for the next piece!

Jute is a natural and biodegradable material, grown from a plant. That is spun into coarse, strong threads. The plant is harvested between June & September and soaked in water, the plant’s bark is then stripped and dried. This makes the final product durable and easy to maintain, making it an excellent choice for a bedroom rug.

Sleep well in ethical bed linen

We spend a significant amount of time in bed, so it's essential to have comfortable bed linen. Our Amalfi Ladder Stitch Bed Linen, New Yorker Stripe Bed Linen and Field of Dreams Bed Linen sets are manufactured in a family-run mill in Pakistan that has been producing textiles since 1954.

The cotton used is sourced under the Better Cotton Initiative standard, ensuring that cotton communities in Pakistan survive and thrive while protecting and restoring the environment. The BCI programme helps to improve cotton production practices by promoting sustainable farming menthids such as using water efficiently, reducing the use of harmful pesticides and chemicals and promoting biodiversity in cotton fields.

This not only reduces the environmental impact of cotton production but also increases yield and improves the quality of cotton produced. The BCI programme also works towards improving the livelihoods of cotton farmers and workers by not just training and capacity building but also providing access to global markets and in turn opportunities.

This beautiful bed linen is also hypoallergenic, breathable, and easy to care for, making for both peace of mind, and a great night's sleep.

Pick an eco-friendly paint

When it comes to painting a room, it's important to choose a paint that is eco-friendly and low in VOCs (volatile organic compounds).

Farrow & Ball was the first company to switch to complete water-based paint, and their products are free from harmful chemicals, making them a great choice for a bedroom.

Our Darjeeling Chest of Drawers is carved from ethical mango wood and hand-finished in Farrow & Ball James White paint, and looks stunning paired with other classic white furniture and natural textures.

Invest in natural wooden furniture

At French Bedroom, we believe in sourcing wooden furniture from forests with regeneration projects.

Our new Celine & Clemence furniture collection is handcrafted from mahogany wood grown in plantations specifically planted for furniture. This ensures that the wood we use is ethically sourced, and that the forests are preserved for future generations.

The Entente collection features a trio of beautiful pieces, including a console table, a bedside table, and a round lamp table, all designed to create a beautiful and naturally styled bedroom.

Look out for packaging

We understand that packaging is an essential part of the delivery process. We need to make sure we use packaging to protect particularly heavy or delicate pieces. However, we also recognize that packaging can have a significant impact on the environment.

The best way to protect furniture is with moulded polystyrene, but it has a big carbon footprint and is difficult to dispose of. At French Bedroom, we're looking at alternative ways to package our products, such as using cardboard, paper, recycled, and recyclable materials.

We've pledged to use entirely recyclable or recycled packaging by 2025. You can find more information about our goals and sustainability pledges on our website.

Factor in delivery

When it comes to getting your new furniture or décor to your home, it's important to consider the impact that delivery can have on the environment.

That's why we choose to pay more for a delivery service with humans, not automated systems. By choosing delivery companies that prioritize human workers, we're able to support ethical business practices and ensure that the deliveries of our lovingly made furniture are handled with care and attention to detail.

In conclusion, making little considerations to decorate more sustainably is important for those of us who want to reduce their impact on the environment. By choosing natural and eco-friendly materials, such as natural wood French furniture, reclaimed wood beds, and luxury jute rugs, you can create a more beautiful and greener home for the whole family.
